The Wooden Wheelbarrow Workshop produces handcrafted wooden wheelbarrows to the highest quality. A long experience in woodcraft means that these barrows are extremely strong and reliable. The materials used, which are specially selected English woods, make the wheelbarrow durable.

These full-size Victorian Wooden Wheelbarrows are meticulously hand-crafted using all the traditional skills of the Wheelwright. Elm, Oak & Ash are used in the wooden wheel of each wheelbarrow. The body & frame of the wheelbarrow is constructed of Spruce which is sanded to a fine finish and treated with a coat of wood preservative making the wheelbarrow into a splendid tool that will give many years of gardening pleasure.

The large wooden wheel is fitted with an original iron hoop, built to last a lifetime and allowing you to push the barrow easily. The wheel of the barrow is made in the time-honored way with the iron hoop heated and then shrunk onto the wheelbarrow wheel. These methods have been used by wheelwrights and wheelbarrow makers for several centuries.

Many people like to use the wheelbarrows as a tool but an equal number of customers wish to plant up their wheelbarrow to make a focal feature in their garden. To protect your wheelbarrow we can supply and fit inside the wheelbarrow body, a galvanized steel liner to protect the wood from the elements. This also means that the wheelbarrow liner can easily be lifted out of the barrow and planted up in the greenhouse or potting shed, ready to be placed in the garden when the young plants have fully developed and all fear of frost is over. As the wheelbarrows are of an all wood construction they are not damaged by frost. Nor will your plants get too hot as the wooden sides of the barrow body do not conduct heat .

These splendid wheelbarrows are the type that have been featured in paintings and photos of the Victorian and Edwardian periods. They often included a wooden extension to the wheelbarrow .These would be placed around the outer edge of the wheelbarrow body thus adding to the depth of the barrow body and increasing the carrying capacity of the wheelbarrow. The wheelbarrow extensions is particularly useful for carrying lightweight bulky items such as Autumn leaves etc.

This is a real wheelbarrow of the type seldom seen except in films, magazines or historical archives. The truly English Wheelbarrow is durable, beautiful and very photogenic. The wheelbarrow will give many years of gardening pleasure to it's owner.

Traditional Wooden extensions are available with reinforced corners and hooks to attach to the wheelbarrow . £65. These are a useful addition to the wheelbarrow, they almost double the carrying capacity of the wheelbarrow and are particularly useful for the carrying of lightweight bulky items

About the Wheelwright:

Vyvyan Hoskin, the Wheelwright , has been building carriage wheels and wheelbarrows for over 30 years. He is very meticulous and does not believe in compromising quality. His knowledge of wood is extensive and he prepares all the timber used in the wooden wheelbarrows. He had made many Carriage wheels including Prize winning show vehicles and others for the Royal Mews .Our workshop is based from our Organic Smallholding in Oxfordshire where we produce all our own food (be prepared for chickens free-ranging around the stable yard!) and have been awarded an Oxfordshire County Council Special Commendation for Environmentally Sound Business Practices .We know that the Wheelbarrows we make are unrivaled for quality, practicality, good looks and value for money.
